Carb Advice

Hey guys, just lookin for some advice and ideas on puttin a 32/36 carb on my type 2 (1600).
i’m just wantin some more grunt for those long, heavily laiden hills (have you tried to drive to Hoe Point on Skye), and yes it is a really place
thats why we went there!

Cheers

I used to run a 32/36 carb on my 1600SP in the beetle and found it pretty good, definatly produced more power when you put the foot down but of course MPG wasn’t hurt if you drive gently.
Well worth rigging up a hot air pick up hose to try to avoid carb icing.
Cheers

I ran a pair of 34 Webers on Jen’s Beetle for a while. I sold them to Keith. Nice simple pair of carbs, easy to keep in tune. Improved fuel economy as well!

http://www.dellorto.co.uk/ and other suppliers as well

£300 plus VAT

Have any of you guys run a Reece Fish carb?
I believe Minnow Fish is in Oban and that they tune them

Ran a Reece Fish my Dad once had on his '68 1500 for rallies & autotests, but on a 1600 in my 1303S in the 80’s.
Noticed a slight increase in power, but fuel consumption went way up from an average 30mpg to a scary 15! w00t.gif
A nice simple carb, but not an economy level I could stand for long!
I’d avoid single or twin choke central carbs for performance with good economy - duals is the way to go!
After all, Porsche fitted them to the flat four when they gave their first Beetle based sports cars a much deserved power hike.
Okrasa & Oettinger also tuned aftermarket VW engines, and binned the single carb with T-piece manifold to let the air-cooled boxer units breathe better, and avoid icing problems. The heat from the heads keeps the shorter manifolds warm enough to run cooler (denser) air for that wee bit extra oxygen.
Baby Dells are good, but dual twin 36DRLAs are my favourite from 1600 - 2000cc :thumb:

shame, they look so cool!
are there any other decent period carbs about?

No pics of them fitted to a Bug, but these are the spec sheets I inherited…

cheers, im thinking of going for a period look on the bug, thinking of ideas!

is that a good price? it certainly looks good

It looks pretty good, ut it is only one i think?!

A pair of Fish carbs would be a most interesting experiment on a V-dub!
They originally said a single was all that’s necessary, but we all know how detrimental the T-piece centre manifold is to breathing and carb icing.
Fish carbs for VWs came with a 12V heating collar around the inlet, but even that wasn’t enough in the winter.
Get a pair of stubby cast iron Type 3 (Fastback) twinport manifolds and the Reece VW adaptor kits should fit.
Sorting a linkage would be a challenge, but an adapted Kadron or Berg kit could work.
Then there’s the carb size to consider. I think 1+1/2 inch was the throttle bore spec for a single Fish, so a pair of 1+1/4 inch bores would be a good starting point.
I was bidding on a pair on E-bay a while back :

but the reserve was well over £200 and I just couldn’t go that far. mad.gif

Thats sounds good, but i have the mechanical knowledge of a chimpanzee at the moment, so i might struggle with the twin idea!

There is a story about a club member who went to Lochgilphead years ago with one of the first lookers in the country. He got the carb fitted OK. The proprietor of this business always test drives the cars to make sure his installation is working like it should. Our member went along for the ride - bad move.

There are some interesting roads in that part of Argyle. A freshly tuned Beetle going at full chat, around a bend, with negative camber, over a crestand witha big drop on one side, is not the place to be sitting in the passenger seat. Apparently the nosebleed did nothing for the new, show-class interior.

Where is this member now?

Not George Brookmann then? heehaw.gif

Not that I recall that particular story, but I remember him building one of the first ‘lookers’ Cal style in Scotland… bowdown.gif

I thought that was Nino Del Rio? Cracking story, should be written in to local VW folk law!

Yes, it was rumoured to be Nino.

Just thought I’d jump onto this thread, if you dont mind that is wave.gif

I’ve a set of Del 40’s on my split and I’m after a bit of advice.

The chap at Pitcaple that was working on me camper said that there was some corrosion inside the carbs. I think this may have been caused by them icing up on the drive up the road earlier this year. One side has a jet blocked up, not sure on the working of these so I dont know which one.

So whilst it’s not being used I was thinking about getting it seen too. Is there anybody in Scotland that I can send them to be refurbed and balanced?

Also, whats the best way to stop this from happening again? The first one that says “dont drive when it’s cold” will get a prize

a phone call at 03:30 in the morning for a week biggrin.gif
