Club Beetle Prioject

Just and update for all. The club beetle project has now started to move ahead. Bob and I picked it up from PFP and is now sitting at Bobs work waiting…

We now need to sit down and plan how we are going to approach this. A 1 year plan makes sense. So hopefully this time next year we will have a Beetle that we will be able to sell and donate proceeds to charity…Suggestions and ideas are greatly appreciated.

Some of the aims of the project are to get the esprit de corps of the club fired up. Shed some technical knowledge and generally have some good times together.

Thanks to Rob for allow the Beetle to live at Buccleuch Engineering. Now the work begins.

Excellent - I think this could be an ideal vehicle for technical evenings as well - Remember “Uncle Georges Problem Spot” ?

I suspect I ought to skin some knuckles on this project as I was a passenger in a former LVWC club car when it met its maker…

not seen the driver for a while. will help all i can

Suggestion 1
Lets make this a 12 month Project

Suggestion 2
Lets highlight what needs doing and base technical evenings on the Haynes or similar manual chapter layout

Suggestion 3
Keep a well documented (including photo’s) history of the project

When do we start in earnest on this Bug?
I haven’t even seen the car, and there must be many others who’d like a look - before Biggar anyway, where there’s an ideal opportunity to talk the project over with our beers & burgers, and get some essential spares from the traders.
Maybe we can start the next Blether cruise at Buccleuch Business Interiors? Say, meet half an hour earlier than usual for those who want a look? Up to Bob to allow this of course, but if it’s not suitable on Wednesday, how about the weekend?

Not that I know alot yet (kinda learning as I go along) but I’d sure be willing to help out in any way I can. I’m pretty sure I’d be able to come up trumps where spares are concerned as I seem to have a complete (apart from the arse missing n the baja rear kit fitted) other bug in my garage gathering dust.

I was intending striping it of every single useable part n keeping them for spares for my 1200 & then dare I say, ditching the body. I’m sure I could be convinced to part with a few bits n bobs if the project car needs them.

Would be good to check the car out properly and make a list of what it needs.
I’ve got a few bits & bobs in The Magic Shed…

I think this represents an opportunity for those lacking in certain skills to get some practice, eg If you’ve never welded before heres a chance to give it a go. Out of curiousity, how sheddy is this vehicle?

i think this would be a great idea to get the new members involved in the club and a great opportunity for the novices (moi) to gain expierience and knowledge from the expierienced memmbers of the club.
(you know who you are)

sounds good to me as being a novice would be good to learn a bit about things

Is this an off the chassis job or weld and grind in situ? should have towed it to Bigger for display before shots and then have it ready for Scottish VW Festival next year it would be a good time to aim for. maybe too late now

Guys, you know that I’m no good with oily things, and I’m no longer in the pizza business, but whenever I’m up and about in Scotland, I’ll be happy to keep you workers supplied with Tea and Biccies! And if you need a retreat in the North of England, you can always bunk down on my new floor!!!
Take care y’all! See you (hopefully!) at the next blether…

any updates?

better starting in the warmer weather and if its going to be a project roughly taking a year next years bigger show seems a good date to get it ready

anything happening here, or is it being kept for the winter

I’m sure this is one hot topic for the committee meeting tomorrow (today!) evening…

At the meeting, it transpires that Robert (who runs the factory where the Beetle is stored) is going to be quite busy in September/October with impending nuptials.
So, we’re viewing this as a project to keep us busy during the winter months.
Sunday 30th October is going to be the inaugural strip-down day so bring your overalls and any fancy tools you may have or wish to demonstrate.
One tool I’m bringing is something I created myself last month. It’s a shallow 13mm hex socket with a 7mm hex drive shaft. This is welded onto said 7mm socket with 1/4" square drive. Ideal for removing the wing bolts, where space is often too tight for a regular 1/2" drive socket.
More details to follow as the big day draws nearer…
