When I was driving my 73 beetle today the generator light came on along with quite a loud buzzing/grinding noise which sounded like it was coming from the fuses.
I was thinking I need to change the brushes but am concerned what the ‘buzzing’ noise may be.
Any ideas or thoughts appreciated! :think
If you can track it down a bit further it would help, but one weird possibility is the indicator relay.
I’ve heard this relay ‘buzz’ before on two of my Bugs - usually after wiring in a high-current accessory via the fuse box instead of using a separate relay. If there’s a voltage drain or large variation in voltage, like when your dynamo packs in, the relay can fluctuate on/off quickly causing the buzz. There could also be a dull glow from the indicator dash light.
Don’t know why it happens, but once you’ve sorted the dynamo with new bushes it should go away.
If not, try a new relay, and clean up all the fuse connections… :thumb:
