If money is tight, stay away from all garages!
:rs

There’s a few things you can check/do yourself before going near a garage.
Is there enough oil in the gearbox? How old is it?
A fill of fresh oil with some magic potion can work wonders for a grumpy gearbox. My old 16V was transformed and it only cost about £20.
Let me know if you want to try this and I can talk you through it.

If the box really IS bad, you’ll have to replace it or have it repaired; replacement probably cheaper option. There are a few breakers around who should have a suitable box.

You really want to save money? You got some tools and space to work on the car? You could change the gearbox yourself!!!
Or maybe not?!

In real life, there is very little difference between GTI Golfs and non-GTI Golfs. If you do decide to use a garage, there’s no need to use a “GTI specialist” - especially for this kind of work. If you’re looking for somewhere good and VW-oriented closer to home that Stonehouse or Motherwell, try Walker Motors at Turnhouse or John Forbes on Meadow Lane.
There are loads of other competent garages in Edinburgh, maybe some peeps who actually live in town will be able to make further suggestions!

Good luck!

Could it be anything to do with those HUUUGE wheels Vicky?

Honestly mate, you have obviusly never had work done by Gregg, he is one of the most reasonably priced garages on the planet and a bloody nice bloke as well…
Bedrock, he is on another planet alltogether with pricing, but heard that he is good for specialist work…

Greg may well be a nice bloke and charge reasonably but DIY is always the cheapest option.
If money really is TIGHT, why not save a little cash by doing the simple stuff at home?
And if a person is confident and able to do bigger jobs, why not do them at home as well?
I know that few people are gonna be happy to swap gearboxes at home but you never know!
:rasp

If money is tight get rid of the GTI your insurance must be seriously silly especially if your a student!

no the insurance is only 250 and i can rally and do track days with that also i can have as many mods ad i llike :rasp

Well once again, a timely piece of advice Nick!
After a month’s ownership, the ‘nifty’ Passat benefitted hugely from pouring a litre and a half of EP90 into its cog box today!
Now just got to gauge how much of the smelly stuff it’s chucking out in the average week…

Vicky, I assume you’re on a budget classic policy with low or non-agreed value and reduced mileage?
If not, please tell us where you got such cheap GTi insurance - and you may have a lot of grateful gearbox mechanics on your side…

hic its under a classic insurance and its fully comp and its valued at 1500 and i got it 300 :rasp
my car was born in 1987

You done well there!
I went to HIC for a quote for Nifty ('98 model, £50 to buy…) as I already had my Bug insured with them, thinking they could do a cheap TPF&T on a virtually valueless car (tho I got 9 points on my license!). Nope - they wanted £170 vs. another net broker (www.confused.com) who done it for £135 instead!
Any results on the gearbox?

…Nifty ('98 model, £50 to buy…)

Typo error - '88 model, not '98 model (though that WOULD be a bargain!)

Nice one - so you should be ready to cruise along to our monthly Blether in it and meet a few of the peeps who post here! Wednesday 14th July’s the date - keep an eye on the forum calendar for cruise details…

Flippin’ typo AGAIN! :rs
I meant Wednesday 13th July!
