Well I had a quick tust run on another bug this afternoon & there’s no way in hell I can shift that nut. I used the relavent socket, 18" breaker bar & a length of scaffolding pole & it ain’t gonna budge. Now as I really need to do the rear breaks on Spongebob asap I see myself with two choices.
!. Buy all the parts, get a bigger piece of scaffolding & perhaps another body. (possibly wasting money in the process on the parts)
Goto my local Kwik Fit n have them do the rear breaks for me
As much as I hate to admit it I think this one had me beat! Any opinions
almost look like hour glass with 36mm hex cut at one end just put over nut and wack. yes it works would lend you mine but some b******d never returned it
No probs, thanks for the advice Ian. Gonna be a damn sight cheaper than taking it to a shop to do. I’ll order the parts & the tool first thing in the morning. I so hate not being able to do things myself.
But at least you can borrow mine when needed once it arrives
We have a cowboy method for big stubborn nuts. usually you just break t bars when using the old scaffold pole. We took the big socket, welded onto it a really big old fashoined square nut ( courtesy of British rail - from sleepers etc). Then get a good pair of Stiltsons, bite into it , attach scaffold and hey presto your weld breaks and you do it again. Anyway it works eventually once you’v e welded it right. Also you can still attach a t-bar through the hole in nut centre.
Well my method is proven. Also only takes 15 mins to make. Recently took flywheel nut of mates 62 Bug after snapping four Bars incl Britool and halfors guaranteed for life ones. Obviously no use without a welder!
I’ve got a heavy duty 36mm socket with 1" drive and T bar - ex ship’s engine room stock! Put a bit of 2 foot rig pipe on the end of it, and my fat erse on the end of that… - well, no axle nut I’ve met has resisted the combination so far!
Wanna give it a go Ally?
Righto! I’m kinda busy gettin’ Nifty fit for sale just now. Never done this w/c thermostat fit biz before so could take anything from one good hour to several sh!te ones. If Spongebob’s still mobile, d’you wanna pop over to borrow the kit or have a go at loosening the nuts here? You’re most welcome…
Either that or I bring the stuff along just before the Blether cruise on Wed…
I’ve got one of those tools that Ian is on about, and no its not Ians old one. It works so well that you can undo nuts even if the gear box is out of the car, and you are unable to apply the brakes. I’ll try and find it in me box of bits.
