Technical help.. slow acceleration on T4 transporter

Hi, I’ve had my ex council T4 minibus that has only done 79,000 miles for a year now and I’ve done a bit of work on it but it’s been great. The only issue though is it is extremely slow. Top speed is fine but acceleration is bad and on occasion it is painfully slow, barely moving at all. Even with my foot to the floor it barely moves at a green light but once on the move it quickly speeds right up. I use it for work so about the town a fair bit. I’m aware of the carbon thing with the diesel van so have taken it on a long drive to burn it off, but on return there is the same issue. Any ideas of what might be wrong with it? I’m no mechanic but plenty have been under the bonnet and can’t see an issue with it.

The issue isn’t always the same. On some occasions I start it and it’s off like a rocket! Other times it’s SO slow. Recently it’s been as bad as it’s ever been. Mechanics have had a look but someone I know mentioned the pistons could be full of carbon from the low mileage and town driving from its earlier life. It was used from 0 miles - 73,000 miles just driving around the town.

Any help greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Do diesels have a maf sensor? I got all kinds of odd performance things with the Ibiza when the maf sensor was on the way out. If you unplug it it goes to a generic safe setting so you can see if it sorts it?
